Nebulizers have become more technologically advanced thereby resulting in better treatment of asthma patients, delivery of medication to the lungs of sufferers are more targetted than before and this have helped in easing the time spent per treatment.
A compressor is a pump that uses air or sound energy to deliver medication to the lungs via the nebulizer (a specially designed medication cup with mouthpiece), the compressor is often confused as the nebulizer as the name have become interchangeable however they are two different things though most manufacturer now supply them together as a package so you wouldn't have to be worried about getting the right combination of equipment.
I will be touching on topics dealing with buying and caring for your nebulizer it is important to understand how a nebulizer work.
Types of Nebulizers:
The nebulizers you will come accross include the Jet Nebulizer and the Ultrasonic nebulizer.
Jet Nebulizer
The Jet Nebulizer uses a medical techonology that allows the equipment to change the nebulizer medication into a droplet almost like steam that directly targets the patients lung via the use of a mouthpiece or mask, inhaled medication are great candidate for this type of nebulizer, it is the recommended nebulizer for liquid suspension medications that have drug particles in them because it can effectively deliver the particles which is the active ingredient in that medication. Used mostly in medical institutions or in severe cases of attack, another name for this kind of nebulizer is atomizer.
Ultrasonic Nebulizers
Ultrasonic nebulizers works by using sound energy to achieve the same goal of of changing the liquid medication into a inhalable form such as a mist, they are generally very portable and small, they are so small in some cases they can go in the palm of your hands, one more important characteristic of this nebulizer is that some of them come with a car adapter or battery pack that make it possible to use the nebulizer when you are on the road or just doesn't have access to electricity, your choice of nebulizer depend on the medication prescribed and your condition so you need to consult your physician before purchasing any nebulizer.
Nebulizer Cleaning & Mantainance Tips
It is very important that you clean and maintain your nebulizer well for effective treatment of asthma and other respiratory and lung disorders you may have because a dirty nebulizer can lead to infection or blockage of the hose or tubing which will result in less or infected medication delivery to your lungs.
Do not remove the outer casing of your compressor or pump for any reason, it may kill you!
Cleaning the nebulizer before you use it for the first time, after each treatment, use fresh cleaning solution and always air dry the nebulizer (do not air dry). If your physician or the manufacturers representative (dealer) give you instruction then do whatever they say, or if you are using one of those medical disinfectant cleaner then follow that manufacturers instruction otherwise follow the cleaning instruction below.
- Disconnect the nebulizer and mouthpiece from tuning
- Take the nebulizer chamber apart (follow manufacturer's disassemblying instruction)
- Use two plastic containers, fill one with hot water and detergent solution for washing, fill the other with hot water and vinegar solution (one quarter vinegar and three quarter water)
- Clean the nebulizer (not the pump or compressor) and mouthpiece in solution detergent with hotwater
- Remove and rinse with hot tap water
- Soak in the vinegar solution hot water for 30 minutes.
- Rinse with hot tap water and air dry till it is completely dry.
- The tubing need to be wiped regularly and it does't have to be washed internally because only air goes through.
- To clean the compressor or pump use a wet soft close on the casing once a day and dry with a dry towel.
Can be cleaned in 121 degree C hot water or autoclave for 10 minutes, air dry and store as instructed by your manufacturer.
Nebulizer Replacement.
Your nebulizer must be changed once every 6 months to 1 year (reusable nebulizer) and 30 days (disposable nebulizer)
Filter Replacement
When your filter turns gray then it is time to change it or when you must have used it for approximately 20-30 hours.
